A judge in southern Illinois has officially thrown out a man’s murder conviction, in regard to the 2014 death of a Southern Illinois University student. The Jackson County judge vacated Eldorado resident Gaege Bethune’s 1st-degree murder conviction on Monday, in regard to the death of 19-year-old Pravin Varughese. A jury had convicted Bethune back in June, in regard to Varughese’s death, but his new defense attorney sought to have the conviction thrown out. Reports indicate that a new trial will soon begin. Prosecutors say that Bethune and Varughese were intoxicated when they fought, while driving around Carbondale looking for cocaine back in February of 2014, and that Bethune caused head injuries that left Varughese disoriented, and led to his hypothermia death. Bethune’s attorney argued that no evidence was presented at the trial to prove that claim by the defense. More information will be released, once it becomes available on this trial.
