A House committee is going to take up Governor Bruce Rauner’s plan to reinstate the death penalty in certain cases in Illinois. The House Judiciary-Criminal Committee met on Monday for a testimony on Rauner’s proposals. Rauner added that the death penalty in an amendatory veto of legislation that he created, which would extend the waiting period for delivery of assault weapons to 72 hours, instead of 24 hours. Rauner’s changes included imposing the 72-hour waiting period for all guns, including a ban on bump stocks, which speeds up the firing rate on rifles. He also had included the authorization for police to confiscate weapons from dangerous individuals and more. Representative Jonathon Carroll is the sponsor of the waiting-period legislation, with the Northbrook Democrat saying that the committee hearing will take the pulse of the people. There will be no committee vote on this measure at this time, since Carroll says he cannot predict what the next step will be.
