According to Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks, a 76-year old rural Texico man died over the weekend from what appears to be an accidental gunshot wound to the chest, suffered in his tree stand when he attempted to remove his gun from its holster. Authorities say when Robert Okraj of East Canton Road did not return home, his wife went looking for him and he was found in the tree stand several hundred yards behind his house.  His wife initially thought Okraj had died from a heart attack, but as Kell firefighters removed the body from the tree stand around 8 o’clock the other night, they discovered the gunshot wound.  Marks says investigators with both the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Illinois State Crime Scene agree the shooting was accidental and apparently occurred when Okraj reached under his coat to get out his gun.
