SALEM — A Thursday night stabbing in downtown Salem is under investigation.

According to Salem police, around 9:57 p.m. Thursday night, Salem Township Hospital notified them a stabbing victim had come to their emergency room for treatment.

The 32-year-old Iuka man was reportedly stabbed in his arm. He was ultimately airlifted to a St. Louis area hospital for further treatment.

The victim told police an unknown individual stabbed him in the 100 block of South Broadway.

Police say that about five minutes before Thursday night’s stabbing, they responded to a report of several individuals fighting in the 600 block of West Schwartz. However, no one was present upon their arrival. The evidence did indicate someone had been injured at the site.  Evidence was collected and a search was conducted for an injured person, but so far no one has been found.

Police are investigating the incidents as separate and isolated. Anyone with information or video of either incident is urged to contact the police department at 618-548-2232.
