Patricia Lee Gardner Hanagan, age 88, passed away in Kennewick, WA, on July 10th, 2020, following a courageous journey through Alzheimer’s disease.  She was born on December 11th, 1931 in Benton, IL to the late Robert Ezra and Ethel Belle (Williams) Turnage and soon after moved and was raised in Marion, IL.  She married Carl R. Gardner in 1951, living in Marion till his death in 1984.  She married William D. Hanagan in 1986, living in Mt. Vernon, IL till his death in 2006.  She subsequently moved back to Marion until moving to Washington State in 2011 for the last chapter of her life.

Patricia is survived by daughter Deborah (John) Morgan (Marion, IL); son Marty Gardner (Kennewick, WA); grandchildren Daniel Evetts (Francisco, IN), Melissa Evetts (Brighton, CO), Jennifer Dionne (Cheyenne, WY), Kara Gardner (Fort Collins, CO), Holly Busch (Walla Walla, WA), and Gabe Gardner (Kennewick, WA); great-grandchildren (Ashley, Lily and Lance) Evetts, (Gabrielle and Ewan) Mather (Brighton, CO), (Sedona, Amariah and Riker) Dionne, and June Nelson (Walla Walla, WA); step children Chris Hanagan (Key West, FL), Michael (Randi) Hanagan (Mt. Vernon, IL), Patty Hanagan (since deceased), Dr. William D. Hanagan, Jr. (Mary Ann) (Newark, DE), Kate Hanagan (Robbinsdale, MN) and Steve (Cissy) Hanagan (Mt. Vernon, IL); step grandchildren Kayla (Brandon) Galloway (Houston, TX) and Ryan Hanagan (St. Louis, MO); step great grandchildren Eli and Parker Galloway.  Additional survivors include nieces Jaye Lander (Lancaster, PA), Bobbi Lander (since deceased), Patricia (Jeff) Ressler (Lancaster, PA) and Kathy (Don) McKinney (Columbia, SC); and nephew Jeff Turnage (Lexington, SC).

In addition to her parents, Patricia is preceded in death by first husband, Carl Gardner, second husband Bill Hanagan, sister Juanita T. Lander and brother Robert E. Turnage.

Patricia was a dedicated member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ for 40 years during her life in Marion.  She converted to Catholicism while moving to Mt. Vernon and was very active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church for 20 years before moving back to Marion and attending St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Her faith was a foundation to her.

Patricia was passionate about education.  She was an educator at Washington school for 15 years in the Marion Unit #2 School district.  She completed both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education from Southern Illinois University while working, being a wife, parent, and caregiver to her parents.

Patricia was also passionate about family; hosting and attending many family reunions, gatherings, and honoring babysitting certificates for great granddaughter June.  She also had a zest for travel; from riding motorcycles to the gulf and the Grand Ole Opry, to visiting Ireland with Alex Beaton tours, the Highland Games in Scotland, the Holy Land and Italy.

Services and Internment will be at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mt. Vernon at Noon on Saturday, October 22, 2022.
