EAST ST. LOUIS — A 31-year-old Centralia man was arrested Monday in Centralia on a federal warrant charging him with a weapons violation.

The single-count indictment was handed down Friday in federal court in East St. Louis, accusing Cody Matson of illegally possessing a firearm.

The indictment says that despite being a convicted felon, in November of 2021, Matson knowingly possessed a Remington model 1911 semi-automatic pistol with a defaced serial number.

Matson was arrested in Centralia in July of 2020 for allegedly shooting at his brother. That case is still outstanding in Clinton County Court where he’s charged with Class X being an armed habitual criminal, two counts of Class 1 aggravated discharge of a firearm at an occupied vehicle, Class 2 aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and three Class 2 counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He’s scheduled for an April jury trial in the Clinton County case and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon on the federal charge in the Federal Courthouse in East St. Louis.
