The Nashville Chamber of Commerce held their monthly General Membership meeting and the guest speaker was Jen Aguilar, owner of Penny Lane Consignments. The store has been open for 6 months and is located behind The Diner, off of Route 127. The chamber member talked about her store and that it sells new and used clothing, as well as furniture and other nick-knacks. But, she also explained that she is a drop off location for various groups. They have a very large facility and can store lots of donated items. She has already sent 3 truckloads of items to the Career Development Center in Fairfield, that employees mentally handicapped adults, so they can have money to have a quality life. If it doesn’t sell in their retail store, the items go to Remains, a recycling textile plant in Saint Louis. Things that are torn, ripped or not useful anymore might recycled down to industrial rags or home insulation or could be sent overseas. This is all important because it keeps the items out of the landfill. She had found out that approximately 80 percent of clothing ends up in the landfill. Aguilar also would like to get involved with community groups that could benefit from the items that are donated to her. Her business also has online sales, as some people don’t want to bring their valuable items in to be sold.
