A shuttered southern Illinois prison is infested with mold, with area residents hoping that it will someday reopen. Reports from an inspection of the former Tamms Correctional Center, found high levels of 2 types of mold, that can cause health issues, including respiratory illnesses. The inspection was conducted back in 2015, about 3 years after former Governor Pat Quinn closed it to cut costs. The former “supermax” prison remains vacant. Corrections Department spokeswoman Lindsey Hess, says that there are no plans to sell or renovate the building. Hess says that the mold is rampant at the former prison, and an adjacent work camp would cost around $2.5-million to fix. Senator Dale Fowler says that the loss of jobs from closing Tamms was devastating to the community. He would like to find another use for the facility.
