The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public of a phone scam, that is occurring in the area. Victims have been receiving calls either by a person or by a recording, claiming that they are from the Social Security Administration, saying that the victim’s Social Security number and account have been frozen, due to criminal allegations. A phone number will be provided in the message, for the person to call, in order to rectify the issue. A monetary settlement amount will be requested, in order to reinstate the account and the number. The sheriff’s office notes that this message is indeed a scam. Residents should immediately call their local law enforcement agency if they receive this call. People are reminded that they should never give out any personal information over the phone to an unknown source.
