Local investigators have a suspect in custody in connection to the death of an 84-year old Bonnie woman.  The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says the body of Rita Newell was found inside her home Friday on West Helkin Drive in Bonnie.  Deputies had been dispatched to the home to check on the well-being of an elderly woman.  When they arrived they had to forcibly enter the home, where they found Newell.  Jefferson County investigators, Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators and the Jefferson County Coroner were dispatched to the scene.  Due to information received at the time of the initial report, the State’s Attorney was notified and they got a search warrant.  Authorities arrested 42-year old Timothy Newell later in the day in Sweet Springs, Missouri.  He is currently being held in the Saline County Missouri Jail.  A waiver of extradition from Missouri has been processed and Newell will be brought back to Jefferson County next week.  The Sheriff’s office said an autopsy of Rita Newell was performed Friday afternoon and further evidence was collected.  Right now, Newell is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Stolen or Converted Vehicle.  The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
