The Hoyleton Grade School Board of Education met last Thursday night and Superintendent Elaine Hemker says they approved a resolution to support Kaskaskia College’s Nashville Extension expansion of a new building, as this can only benefit the county. She reported that they agreed to continue with implementing a tax levy of 4.99 percent, which could provide an additional amount of approximately $23,000. They will not need a Truth in Taxation release, as this is under 5 percent. The 2013 Report Card and the scores were down, much like every school, but there was good news says Hemker. They did make Adequate Yearly Progress in Math, but not English. She reports that the teachers have been working hard in that area to match the Common Core to help test scores, but regulations and standards have been changing at an ongoing pace. Another issue the Board addressed is the future of the school, as they will bring in a professional to discuss the trend of dropping enrollment and what this means for the school. So, the Board will find out what their options are for the future of the school. Finally, Hemker says the Christmas Program is on December 12th at 7 PM.
