The Illinois State Police out of District 13 report a 3-vehicle accident that involved a fatality on Friday afternoon in Washington County near the state lake. According to the preliminary report, it occurred on Illinois Route 127, just a half mile south of Mississippi Road at 3:40 PM, as a box truck, driven by 55-year old Daniel M. Hodapp of Hoffman, Illinois was north bound on Route 127. A pick up truck, driven by 19-year old Matthew T. Klaybor of DuBois, Illinois and a jeep driven by 57-year old Bill W. Baker of Nashville were both south bound with the jeep following the pick up truck. The weather and road conditions at the time of the crash were heavy snow and sleet with a snow and slush covered roadway. Hodapp lost control and entered the south bound lane, striking the pick up head on. The jeep, unable to stop in time, struck the pick up truck in the rear. Klaybor was seriously injured and transferred to Saint Louis University Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Baker, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Washington County Hospital, while Hodapp sustained serious injuries and was also transported to Washington County Hospital. Hodapp was also cited for driving too fast for conditions and expired registration plates.
