The Irvington School Board met Monday night and discussed the tax levy. Superintendent Dave Schulte tells WNSV the rate will be 4.99 and while the equalized assessed value is unknown at this time, they are projecting it to be right around $11 million, up from $10.5 million last year. This was approved later in the meeting. He also said they are receiving some tax levy money, but have not received money from the state, transportation or special education money. Even so, they will only receive 85 percent of what was expected. Also, they are receiving lunch money funding, which allows all students to eat for free, regardless of income. The school uses the community eligibility option and two-thirds of the students eat breakfast at the school and all but a couple eat lunch every day. They went over the Pension Law that goes into effect July 1, 2014 and some of the changes in retirement age and cost of living changes. They received some grants also, one from Pittsburgh Paint Groups in the amount of $896 to pay for some online resources, such as a math program and a quiz generator and other interactive programs, among other resources. Also, Friedens United Church of Christ in Irvington donated some money. The school wrote into that grant for handbells to be used as a music topic, done by the classroom teachers, but also for use in math class. Schulte explains that they will be used for music, but it will be tied into math in the counting, patterns and the rhythms. He says the Christmas Program is tomorrow night at 7 o’clock. The last day of school this year is Friday and students come back on Monday, January 6, 2014. Amber Brink was approved as the scholar bowl sponsor. Santa will arrive at the Irvington Grade School on Saturday by fire truck at 9:30 AM and is sponsored by the Ruritan’s Club.
