A new facility in Williamson County is one of just two full-size operating morgues in southern Illinois and is expected to be used by county coroners throughout the region.  Williamson County Coroner Mike “Junior” Burke says the $300,000 morgue will generate revenue when other jurisdictions use the space for autopsies.  The Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale reports the new morgue has capacity for 20 bodies in two coolers.  It has an evidence room and a room that can be used by detectives conducting death investigations.  Burke hires a forensic pathologist to perform most autopsies.  The county board decided earlier this year to build the morgue instead of renewing the county’s lease on a small building on federal property in the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.
