A southwestern Illinois police chief is out of work just five months after taking over for a predecessor who killed himself.  The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Caseyville Mayor Len Black on Wednesday said he had fired Jose Alvarez to take a different direction with the city’s police department.  Alvarez says he wasn’t aware he’d been fired.  Black hired the 61-year old Alvarez last September after the suicide three months earlier of former police chief J.D. Roth.  Prosecutors had charged Roth with felony misconduct, alleging he made personal use of luggage bought with village funds.  Roth was on paid administrative leave when he died.  Black says he expects to name Alvarez’s interim replacement today.
