State Representative Charlie Meier is urging municipalities, townships, and counties to make two phone calls prior to digging for construction after not doing so cost one city in his district more than $9,000.  “Recently a municipality in my district encountered a problem while performing some routine construction.  Prior to digging, the city called ahead to JULIE and had the various utilities marked.  However, they did not realize they also needed to call the Illinois Department of Transportation and ended up damaging some IDOT-maintained utilities, which ended up costing the city a hefty sum to repair,” Meier said.  Prior to digging, municipalities should call both JULIE and IDOT as some utilities maintained by IDOT are not marked by JULIE when they identify underground lines.   All work on the State right of way must be run through the Department of Transportation, including repairs and/or revisions.  The contact number for IDOT District 8 in Collinsville is 618-346-3100.  Additionally, information about this procedure can be found on IDOT’s website.  To contact JULIE and place a locate request, call 811 or 1-800-892-0123.
