The West Washington County School District Board of Education met Thursday night and Superintendent Scott Furhop says they set graduation dates with the high school being May 25th at 2 PM and the 8th grade on May 29th at 7 PM, both in the school gym. The Board also awarded the grass cutting contract to Quality Turf out of New Baden. They also approved the amended calendar without any new changes, as they did not have any snow days since the last meeting. It was just a formality to finalize it. They only had a first reading on the next school year’s calendar with no action taken. The Board approved the field trip for the school’s yearbook and newpaper staffs, as they will travel to SIU Carbondale for competition. Furhop says the Board did make a change in a school policy regarding giving out any medication. This means students will need a note from a doctor at the beginning of the school year or with their physical that the school can give the student medicine like Tylenol that is non-prescription. In personnel actions, as mentioned on Friday, Baseball Head Coach, Rick Gaebe resigned due family medical issues that require his immediate attention and won’t allow him extra time. He will remain at the school as a teacher. The Board accepted his resignation as coach and then hired Jackie Smith to take his place immediately. Cameron Obermeier will take over as the head coach for the JV squad. Also, 2 junior varsity track coaches were hired and that includes Valerie Tepe and Keith Riechmann. Cheerleader coach Heather Rudy is going to have a baby, so she will not be back next year and the Board hired Amy Welsh to take her place.
