What the U.S. Geological Survey had reported last Thursday night’s earthquake about 9 miles east-southeast of Ina and 17 miles south-southeast of Mount Vernon, is now being blamed on possible mining activity in the area.  The USGS initially reported a 2.7 magnitude earthquake around 10 PM that night, but has now deleted the report, saying the event was more likely due to mining activity in the area.  The event was in the Illinois Basin Ozark Dome, a large region that borders the much more seismically active New Madrid seismic zone on the seismic zone’s north and west.
