The annual meeting of the City of Nashville Gas Emergency Plan was held last night at the American Legion. City Utility Supervisor Blaine Middleton explains the purpose of the meeting, as it is to talk with city officials, employees, emergency management personnel and other first responders about what to do in dealing with an emergency within the city, if it ever happens. Not only were city personnel there, county personnel were at the meeting, as this also concerns them. This meeting dealt with natural gas. In many cases, emergency crews and first responders are likely be on scene before the gas company employees can get there, so they need to be aware of what the different signs in the yard mean, as well as what the proper procedure is to deal with a gas emergency. There were a couple of videos also shown, but the 2 main ideas were to evacuate the area and to look for migrating gas. The plan is comprehensive and it has been updated every year, except for 2007 and also in 2001, when it was updated twice. There are 30 miles of pipe in Nashville taking natural gas to 1,600 customers, so there is plenty to look out for when digging on any property. He stressed that anyone planning on digging should call 811 to get someone out to check for any lines in the ground, be it water, gas, communication or power. The city will come out to check to allow for safe digging, and Middleton says to be precise and detailed on the plans and what is in that area.
