The West Washington County School District Board of Education met Thursday night and Superintendent Scott Furhop says they approved the 2014-2015 school calendar and they set the Treasurer’s salary at $1,400 as they appointed Melissa Leadendecker to that position again.  This may seem low, but Fuhrhop explains that this is a checks and balance system the district uses once a month, as Leadendecker will check the books.  They had a first reading of the Student Handbook, but took no action.  Two medical policies were discussed and approved and Fuhrhop elaborates that school immunizations are required two weeks earlier now, so they are due in September instead of October.  The other requires a doctor’s note for any medicine to be dispensed to the student at school.  The Board approved the increase of substitute teacher pay from $65 per day to $75 per day starting next school year.  They too approved the prevailing wage for any outside work done to the school, as is required by the government.  There will be a concession stand built and the Board approved Fuhrhop to begin seeking bids for the materials needed to build it, they will do the work.  There were two teachers that turned in resignations, but they aren’t until 2018.  This includes junior – senior high school Physical Education teacher Kathy Lanter and 2^nd grade teacher Cindy Hundelt.  Also, Mike Frederking and Dave Blumhorst are stepping down as coaches.  Frederking has been the boys’ junior high school basketball coach and he wants to watch his daughter play sports, while Bloomhorst has been the girls’ golf coach and his work schedule was not going to allow him the necessary time to coach.  $1,500 was raised for the school foundation during a car wash event.  Fuhrhop also talked about the great showing at a United Nations Model UN event held earlier this month as 9 students won the highest award at the event held at McKendree University and Kara Schnoeker won a $4,000 scholarship.  Graduation is set for Sunday, May 25^th at 2 PM in the gymnasium, while the last day of school is May 29^th.
