The Nashville High School Board of Education met for the longest meeting of the year. It’s getting towards the end of the year and there is more to cover. They first accepted the resignation of Leigh Ann Cloud as assistant drama coach. She will remain as the Media Center Director. Margaret Snyder with Little Hornet Football presented a check to Music Director Steve Browne for $1,000 to the music program for work done in the concession stand by music students throughout the Little Hornet football season. She complemented the students on the professionalism while working. Tom Leahy of the Illinois Association of School Boards made a presentation to the Board on their ability to assist on finding the next Superintendent for NCHS as Wendy Davis will be retiring after the next school year. Leahy said since the Board is already a member, there would be a reduction in fees for services. The cost would be $5,500 if contracted before July 1st. They would help with setting up the process to interviewing candidates. The IASB is a not-for-profit organization, but the school could do everything on their own or go with a private firm. They are still in the information gathering phase. The school Media Center received another $750 grant on top of the other grants this year. The Board also approved Davis to begin the bid process for 275 new seats for the auditorium. Through the fundraising in memory of Big O and donations to the school, there has been nearly $36,000 raised. Another golf tourney is planned for the summer and that will be close to the $43,000 to $45,000 needed for the project. Davis explained how the process could be sped up, as the Board will pay to get the project done, if all fundraising is not completed when payment is needed, and then be reimbursed afterwards. They want to get this done as soon as possible, which may be as early as this summer or after the Fall play in November. The Board also approved 2 summer workers for the summer maintenance and that is again Chris Bergman and Alex Leitz. They approved an overnight field trip for the boys’ basketball team at McKendree University in July. Davis presented the financial update as of the end of the 3rd quarter. The school year is 75 percent over and they have received nearly 84 percent of their education funding. She expects the rest to come through as expected in the next couple of months. They have spent 73 percent of their budget, so they are on target. The operations and building funding will be a different story, once the year is over. They have received a couple of $50,000 matching maintenance grants, so they will receive this $100,000, but they will then show an expenditure of $200,000, but Davis says they have been saving money and have the funds to do all of this. Currently the school has received nearly 90 percent of the transportation funding, but she isn’t sure if they will be getting much more. The Olympiad Teams are at State competition right now and Davis says their hotel rooms were provided by an anonymous donor. The Board approved the 2014-2015 School Calendar and it will be similar to this year. The first day students report will be August 13th with 2 weeks at Christmas and graduation on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Davis brought up the fact that the school upped the Driver’s Education fee to $75 a couple of years ago with the agreement to raise it to $100 after that. They hadn’t done that yet, so she asked the Board and they agreed to have her begin that process to raise it, so they could vote on it soon. They also approved to repay the Interfund Loan in the amount of $20,000, as they had borrowed from it earlier last fall, but funding has come in and they can replace that money. Both the Summer Music Camp and Athletic Camps were approved by the Board. They also approved Davis to begin the process to prepare the tentative amended budget for 2013-2014 and set the public hearing on it for June 23rd at 6 PM, before the regularly scheduled Board meeting. In closed session they approved math instructor Bobby Markotay as the Math Team Coach, social science instructor Erica Niedbalski as a co-coach for the Scholar Bowl Team, as well as Charlie Hatch as a volunteer track coach and Carmen Keller as a Stinger Dance Team volunteer coach. No action was taken on hiring a cheerleading coach, but Davis hopes that is finalized by the next meeting.
