The Kaskaskia College Agriculture program is growing and they will soon be in a new building to allow for more growth.  Aaron Heinzmann, Agriculture instructor at Kaskaskia College says there was only 1 degree in agriculture when he started 10 years ago, but now there are many, plus several certificates.  The program also encourages service organizations for the students and have a National award winning dairy judging team.  The new Agriculture Education Facility is getting ready to open this fall for classes.  Heinzmann talks about how it became part of the campus.  The building had been a part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Disease Lab, but it closed due to budgetary issues.  This left the school with an opening to keep using the building as it had been intended and keep agriculture growing at the school and in the community.  Heinzmann says there are a lot of things they don’t know about yet that they will have the opportunity to do with a lot of hands on experiences that they haven’t had the chance to do yet.  It allows the school to go from an area of 1,500 square feet to 48,000 square feet of space, as well as saving money earmarked for a new Ag facility that can now go towards other projects.
