A union official says an inmate attacked a southern Illinois prison guard, who suffered a broken jaw and needed a dozen stitches. Jeremy Noelle tells WSIL-TV the guard was assaulted Friday morning at the Shawnee Correctional Center in Vienna. He likely will need surgery. WSIL reports it’s the fifth time he has assaulted a prison guard while behind bars. One of the attacks was in 1991 and the other three in 2011. WSIL says the inmate now has been relocated to the maximum-security Menard Correctional Center near Chester. Noelle says the guard was released from the hospital later Friday. The Illinois Department of Corrections says it’s investigating the matter, “takes these incidents with extreme seriousness” and will work with prosecutors to bring charges against the inmate.
