The Nashville High School Board of Education met on Monday night and one of the personnel moves was to hire Cindi Weathers as a part-time assistant for Music Director Steve Browne. At several competitions in the past couple of years, the NCHS marching band has gone up against larger and smaller schools, most of which have smaller bands, but have 2 or more directors, which is the norm he says. Browne talks about how getting an assistant came about, as he went to talk to Superintendent Wendy Davis last year and asked if it was possible to get some help. He says she was very supportive and that she realized that the music program has grown and it might be more than one person can handle, so she looked into the possibility. After many meetings, including with the Board of Education, they decided to hire someone. He says it is difficult to find a part-time music teacher, as they are all looking for a full-time position, but Weathers was a teacher at Carlyle Elementary School and just retired in June. She also has a music degree, plays the piano and sings, so she would be a great fit. Since she is vocal, she will basically take over the Madrigal program, working with the students throughout the first semester, while also working with the Jazz Choir program with Browne helping her. She will coming in a couple days a week and will be working with the vocal component of the Music One Class, which is the beginning class for freshman musicians. She will also help during band class those days to allow Browne to focus on one area of the band, while the rest of the band will not be idle. Browne has been the person involved in every aspect of the music program for many years now, but will have to delegate some of those duties now, so that might be a little bit of a challenge for him, but it will allow him time at night to be with his family as the children grow older, so he is excited about that too.
