The U.S. Geological Survey says a large magnitude-6.9 earthquake has struck a sparsely populated area of central Peru.  There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.  A spokesman for Peru’s fire agency says authorities are still surveying the region, including the Ayacucho area where the quake was centered.  According to the survey’s updated figures, the quake was centered about 290 miles southeast of the capital of Lima.
