The Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees met last night and they approved an Associate in Applied Science Degree that will build on the College’s existing Dental Assisting Certificate, incorporating general education coursework and offering an advanced credential which enhances student preparation for entry-level employment, as well as advancement and cross-training in the workplace.  Graduates of the new degree program will be prepared to assume positions as dental assistants, dental office support staff, and expanded functions assistants.  In addition, the program will enhance their qualifications in applying for Dental Hygiene and Dental Hygiene Practitioner programs, and will offer a pathway for those seeking a position in dental sales, dental laboratory technician, or teaching.   The development of the Associate in Applied Science has been recommended by the program advisory committee, which includes local dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and program faculty.  It reflects employer recognition of the importance of expanded functions and soft skills in the dental office setting.  There is a strong demand for individuals entering this healthcare field.  It is expected that many current and future dental assisting students will find the higher level credential and additional coursework to be an attractive way to further their education and accomplish their career goals.  In personnel action, the Board approved the resignation of Lisa Kampwerth, Network Support Specialist and hired Angela Kohrmann of Aviston as the new Administrative Assistant for the Education Program at the Centralia Correctional Center.  The Board also approved a new position of Director of Legal Services and Risk Management/Planned Giving and appointed Rhonda Boehne to the position and also reclassified Wendy Blythe of Vandalia as the Career Services and Support Specialist.  The Board approved a resolution to accept the bid of $6,223 from K.A.M. Services of Mattoon for asbestos abatement services for the Vocational Area HVAC upgrades through PHS Projects.  They also approved a resolution to accept the bid of $78,700 from Industrial Mechanical Contractors of Centralia for the renovation of the Automotive Technology Vocational Area HVAC Upgrades through PHS Projects.  The Board also approved the purchase of robotics equipment and software from Advanced Technologies Consultant in the amount of $37,050.
