This is the 2nd week of National Preparedness Month. The focus has been on specific needs certain groups of people may have following a disaster and how you can address those needs in your emergency preparedness activities. Make sure the children take part in your emergency preparedness process. Include supplies that will make them feel comfortable and safe during a disaster, such as favorite toys, comfort foods and games. Practice your plan, including going to your safe places for severe storms and evacuating the home, so children are familiar with the plan. If your household includes someone with a disability, medical condition or functional need, be sure to include them in your emergency plan. Find out about special assistance that may be available in your community. Contact your local emergency management agency or fire department so they are aware of these specific needs. Keep extra critical items on hand, such as an extra wheelchair, batteries, oxygen, catheters, medication, food for service animals, and other items you will need in an emergency. If you or someone in your household has a disability and/or functional needs, the Ready Illinois website has a guide that can help with your emergency planning efforts. It’s important to plan for the safety of all family members, including your pets. Plan how to secure pets during severe storms and practice those actions to determine how long it takes. Make sure your pets wear up-to-date ID at all times. Be prepared to take you pet(s) with you if you’re instructed to evacuate your home. Also, make arrangements for a neighbor or nearby relative to check on your pets in the event a disaster occurs and you’re unable to return home for several hours or days.
