This is Illinois Rail Safety Week and the Illinois State Police wants to promote safety for both motorists and pedestrians around railroad tracks. Be proactive and keep a tragedy from occurring either on or around railroad tracks. In 2013, Illinois ranked third in the nation for grade crossing fatalities and third for trespass fatalities. It is no secret the rail industry plays a vital part of Illinois economy, but saving lives on the track is the duty of everyone. District 11 Commander Joe Kollins says that the ISP will conduct several patrols of railroad tracks in an effort to reduce a tragedy from occurring on a train track. Commander Kollins reminds motorists and pedestrians to remember to look, and listen prior to crossing train tracks. Kollins added, “Trains can’t stop quickly, but you can.” Here are some other tips, such as walking or playing on train tracks is dangerous and illegal, be prepared to stop at crossings, cross train tracks at designated highway/railroad crossings, look for the crossbuck sign, lights or gates at crossings, listen for warning bells and whistles, obey the signals and cross the tracks in low gear, as it isn’t safe to change gears while crossing. If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, get out quickly and away from the vehicle and tracks, then call the emergency number posted at or near the crossing, and call 911. When crossing railroad tracks, always follow the law and be aware of your surroundings. For more information about Illinois Rail Safety Week, visit www.illinoisrailsafetyweek.org.
