The Irvington Grade School Board of Education met Tuesday night, as they did not have enough members for the meeting on Monday night, due to illnesses.  Superintendent Dave Schulte says they are using money from a Rural Education Achievement Program grant, so they purchased some Chromebooks for the faculty and staff.  They will be trained to use the computers.  He says they will be able to testing on them and the students will be able to use them as well if needed.  They also went over the Illinois Vision 20/20 grassroots effort to make Illinois education the best it can be and tabled it for next meeting to decide if the Board will support it.  Schulte talked about having someone come in to the school in the middle of January and conduct an active shooter training scenario for the faculty and staff.  This will be on a half day, so the students will not be there.  Schulte explains what will happen.  Nick Heath was a policeman in town and he is a certified active shooter trainer.  He goes through a classroom presentation, as he goes through different scenarios and explains things.  The focus has changed from get in the classroom and hide to get in the classroom, barricade the doors with whatever you can find and look for the secondary exit.  So there is classroom instruction and then everyone is sent back to their room to work.  Shortly after that, Heath and his group come in and shoot a starter pistol and put everybody into action.  It’s actually called the 4 E’s for educate, evade, escape and engage, kind of the 4 steps to take in that order in such a situation.  There will be work done on the boiler by Weeke out of Okawville over the break, as the expansion tank needs to be replaced.  The Board approved of an increase in the gym rental from $25 to $50 for 3 hours.  They will be installing 4 new high definition cameras and upgrading to a high definition recorder, so they will then have 8 cameras inside and outside with the recorder able to go non-stop for 2 weeks.  They also approved the Tax Levy of 4.99 percent and it would mean an additional $16,322, if they get that much.
