The Nashville Chamber of Commerce met yesterday for their monthly General Membership meeting at Little Nashville.  President Pam Smith introduced new Director Doris Povolish, as well as new Board of Director member Brian Rusiewski and Tom Speedie was introduced as President-Elect.  There will be a new event for the businesses in Nashville on April 17th called Spring Madness from 6 to 9 PM, much like Moonlight Madness in November.  The Chicken and Beer Dance with the Beaucoup Bottom Band is on February 28th at the American Legion and the Volunteer of the Year Banquet is on March 16th at the American Legion.  Nominations will be accepted at the Chamber Office.  The membership drive is getting ready to start and information will be going out very soon.  Board member Sara Habbe talked about some changes for the members and potential members to think about.  There are some different packages available, starting at $50 for individuals and organizations, going up to $500 for the platinum level, which they have always had, along with the $100 level.  A $250 level is being added and different things will come with it that the lower levels do not, including different ads in the Nashville News and a ticket to the Volunteer of the Year Banquet.  All the details will be sent out shortly.  Speedie is a lawyer and spoke to the group about some interesting new laws that might affect some of the members.  One is a law that sets how much and for how long maintenance is after a divorce, as this was previously called alimony.  Also, parents should beware that if their underage child provides alcohol to friends at home, in vehicles or on a boat, the parents are responsible and liable, as well as could be arrested in extreme situations.  Anti-bullying laws are becoming stricter, especially in regards to schools, as they can still act upon bullying, even if it isn’t at the school, but affects or disrupts the school.  Employers will need to be more flexible with pregnant workers in allowing them extra consideration for their work environment.  Also, employers cannot ask someone about any criminal history until in an interview, so nothing preliminary.  Also, laws are getting stricter for boaters and they may need to take a driver’s education course on boating to get a license.  Kaskaskia College Nashville Education Center Director Ruth Barzcewski added that all the campuses are smoke free, even in the parking lots.  The next general membership meeting is on Wednesday, February 11th at Buretta’s at noon and the nominees for Volunteer of the Year will be discussed and a winner voted on at that time.
