The Hoyleton Grade School Board of Education met Thursday night and Superintendent Elaine Hemker said it was a brief meeting, but they did talk about the annexation process. The committee trying to get enough signatures to halt the process, still needs approximately 120 to reach the 51 percent. The Regional Office of Education Board of Trustees will still be meeting on February 9th at 6:30 PM to review the petition to annex from the HGS Board. The public is invited to attend the meeting to be held in the new Washington County Judicial Building in Courtroom 1. Hemker says no action will be taken though. The R.O.E. Board will go over the information and still must allow 45 days for the group against the annexation to present their information. This was expected to be due before the February 9th meeting, but the information was not publish in the newspaper on the expected date, so it was delayed a week. Therefore, the new due date is February 13th for the citizens against the annexation. The R.O.E. Board will then make their decision shortly after that, unless, the group against gets 51 percent of Hoyleton Grade School District registered voters to sign, then the annexation is halted. Part of the process is to go through the signatures and make sure they are legitimate though. Hemker says the Board has not addressed the need to find a new superintendent, as she is retiring at the end of the school year, regardless of the outcome of the annexation issue. Also, only 1 person has decided to run for one of 4 spots open on the school Board, so anyone interested needs to find out how to become a write-in candidate within the next few weeks. The next meeting is on February 19th.
