Prom and graduation season is here. Area high school students will soon be participating in prom and graduation celebrations that occur not only at school, but also at private locations. Alcohol and drug use may occur during celebrations at private locations both before and after the school sponsored celebrations. The Illinois State Police will be doing their part to make this a safe prom and graduation season for everyone. Troopers will be conducting directed patrols with aggressive enforcement of “distracted driving” laws and enforcement of the “fatal five”, including DUI, speeding, seat belt, improper lane usage, and following too close. In addition to the directed patrols, Seat Belt Enforcement Zones will also be conducted. The goal of these concentrated efforts is voluntary compliance. Ensure memories of this year’s prom and graduation as positive ones, so don’t use alcohol or drugs, buckle up, and “Stay Alive, Focus on the Drive.” Illinois State Police would also like to remind high school students about the following laws, such as it is mandatory for everyone in a vehicle to wear a seat belt, texting and driving is prohibited, and cell phone use while driving is prohibited.
