The Washington County Health Department is sponsoring another year of electronic waste recycling in 2015. There are 4 days they will be accepting these items and the first date is tomorrow from 9 AM to noon at the Nashville Community Center parking lot. Linda Borowiak, the WCHD Director of Environmental Health says they are having these events to allow residents of the county to properly dispose of their electronics, instead of them being thrown out, harming the environment and cutting down on landfill waste. She says this is in part to the Recycling & Reuse Act of 2012. Items accepted are basically anything that plugs into an outlet that works or not, such as computers, stereo equipment, appliances, and even rechargeable batteries. There is a limit to only 2 televisions per vehicle though and they cannot be busted and they are a big part of the recycling. She says they collected 29,000 pounds or 14.5 tons on the first day last year and half of that weight was in televisions. In fact, last year they collected over 72,500 pounds and they hope to have more this year. RNA Worldwide will bring in trucks to be loaded up and then they will tear the items apart and recycle them. Items not accepted include light bulbs, paint, tires, plastic, chemicals, wood, hazardous materials or waste. She added it might be busy early on Saturday, so she asks that no one just drop off their items beforehand, and be patient during the first hour as it will probably be congested while they try to unload items as quickly as possible. It might even be better to wait until after that first hour to reduce the wait time to get unloaded. If anyone has any questions, call the Washington County Health Department at 327-3644 and ask for Linda or email her at linda.borowiak@washingtonco.illinois.gov.
