There will be some changes at Nashville Grade School and it’s not the fact that Hoyleton students will be attending NGS. Superintendent Mike Brink explained that the 5th through 8th graders will have a block schedule. There will be 4 blocks in the day for classes, with one for math, one for English – Language Arts and one for Science – Social Studies. The final block will be for exploratory classes, such as P.E. or Fine Arts. There will also be block for lunch. Brink explained that they have had an issue that there is not enough time in a class now for some questions at the end or for help on homework, as the students have to get to the room and get ready, while packing up at the end of the class to get to their next class. This will decrease the amount of prep time and moving time, while increasing the time to go over the material and help students. This has already been approved by the Board. At last night’s Board of Education meeting, he explained a proposal for 3rd and 4th graders to go from an isolated setting to a departmental setting. Students would have larger blocks of time for the Common Core classes, while this will allow the teacher to focus on one subject, instead of everything. Also, some students are pulled out of classes throughout the day, which causes the teachers to stop and find other things to do, until all the students are back, and this new system would allow for it to occur only once a day. There would also be an exploratory segment to each day, with it being for P.E. or some other class for 3 days each week, while the other 2 days would be for homeroom. No action was taken on this idea.
