Today is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day and the Humane Society of Missouri says, “Shelter adoption is the best option for both people and homeless pets.”  Often animals are left at shelters because of circumstances beyond their control, such as a caregiver passed away, the family moved, or the home was not a good fit for them.  Adopting a pet from a shelter has many benefits.  Many pets in shelters are full-grown with mature personalities and are experienced at living in a household so adopters can more easily know what they are getting.  Many of pets are up-to-date on all vaccinations and shelter adoption fees are generally lower than breeders or pet stores.  Adopting a shelter animal gives a home to an otherwise homeless animal.  While bringing a new pet home is fun, it is a commitment that needs to be fully evaluated.  Before adopting, the Humane Society encourages potential pet parents to think about their lifestyle and consider how much time they have to devote to a new animal.  Resources for adopting and owning a pet can be found in the Bringing a New Pet Home section of the Humane Society’s website at www.hsmo.org.  The Washington County Animal Shelter has some cats and dogs that need homes.  Call them at 327-4800, extension 355.
