The Nashville High School Board of Education met last night for a long meeting. They said goodbye to outgoing members Dave Ibendahl, Doug Snead and Scott Thompson, as well as hello to the winners of the recent election, Paul Barczewski, John Hallock and Tom Speedie. They set the Board Secretary’s salary at $500 again, but Sharon Ogrzewalla declined it, so it was deferred, which was approved by the Board. They then set the Treasurer’s salary at $185 per month, which it has been for some time. This was also approved. The officers were then nominated and approved with Shawn Cook remaining President, Marsha Gajewski is Vice President and Ogrzewalla is Secretary. They also approved of Audrey Breuggemann to remain the Treasurer. The meeting dates will remain on the 3rd Monday of each month at 6 PM in the Media Center, unless there is a conflict with a holiday. This also was approved of by the Board. Rhonda Reuter will remain the Kaskaskia Special Education District Board representative, as she has been doing for years. The Board accepted the resignation of math teacher Lauren Cleeton, as she will be teaching at McKendree University next school year. Superintendent Wendy Davis went over some important dates for the remainder of the year. Graduation is on May 24th, while the Baccalaureate will be on May 17th. The last day for seniors is on May 19th and it is May 26th for the rest of the students with exams on May 21st, 22nd and 26th. Teachers will have an in-service day on May 27th. Also, the senior athletic banquet is on May 12th. The art students went to the Chalk Walk competition with 3 teams and one of them won the competition out of 77 teams total. Little things have begun to happen for the removal of asbestos and some carpeting from much of the school, but the real work is scheduled to begin on June 1st. This means the custodial crew will need to clear out classrooms to get ready, as well as all the other work they do during the summer to get the school ready in August. Davis had high praise for Barry Morris and his crew. The school got an “A” status after the Regional Office of Education #13 compliance inspection. There were no problems and everything was the way it was supposed to be thanks to Morris and his crew. Despite a new, high net being installed at the baseball field to keep baseballs from going on the track during practices or meets, as well as in the concession stand area, there have been some home runs hit over the netting. There isn’t anything else they can do, but they will put up some disclaimer signs to warn people. The Board approved of some field trips including the Math Team going to State Competition, a small group of students going to the Future Business Leaders of America Leadership Conference and the summer boys’ basketball camp. They approved the updated job descriptions for certified staff, which the teachers had put together with specifics, instead of it just being something generic. Incoming Superintendent Ernie Fowler had already reviewed them and approved of them as well. The 2015 – 2016 school calendar was approved. August 11th will be an in-service day, while the students return on August 12th. Christmas break begins at the end of classes on December 22nd and students are back in school on January 4th. Spring break is set around Easter again from March 24th through the 29th. The junior music summer camp was approved to use the facilities July 20th through the 24th, while all the athletic camps were approved to use the facilities throughout the summer.
