The Illinois State Police report there was an accident on Friday afternoon on Interstate 64 in the eastbound lanes at milepost 72 involving 3 vehicles with several people taken to hospitals.  According to the report, an SUV driven by 20-year old Jessalee J. Thompson was eastbound on Interstate 64 at milepost 72.  Traffic began to slow due to an approaching construction zone, but Thompson stated she did not see an SUV driven by 68-year old Phillip L. Wagenknecht until it was too late to avoid crashing into the rear of his vehicle.  During the accident a pick-up truck driven by 57-year old Kennith R. Wavering also sustained minor damage.  All vehicles exited the roadway and entered into the median.  All occupants in Thompson’s vehicle, including 21-year old Katelyn N. Gupton and 3 additional children, as well as Wagneknecht were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital.  Two of the three juvenile occupants were then airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in Saint Louis.   State Police units were on scene for several hours.  Thompson was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident.  Also, not everyone was wearing their seatbelt, which accounted for some of the injuries.
