The Illinois State Police report that there was a multiple vehicle injury crash on Friday, just after 12 noon on U.S. Route 51, northbound at Interstate 64 in Washington County. According to the preliminary report, a pick-up truck driven by 40-year old Jesse L. Baltzell from Mount Vernon, was southbound on U.S. 51 at the Interstate 64 interchange. A car driven by a 16-year old male from Centralia was northbound on U.S. 51 at the Interstate 64 interchange. Baltzell slowed to turn eastbound onto the entrance ramp to Interstate 64 eastbound. As he made his turn, he drove in front of the car causing a collision. The car suffered extensive damage, which resulted in the driver becoming entrapped in the vehicle, while Baltzell was not injured. The Irvington and Ashley Fire Departments responded along with the Washington County Ambulance service. The roadway was shut down for approximately 1 ½ hours while emergency personnel extricated the driver from his car. Life Flight arrived on scene and once the driver of car was removed from his vehicle, he was transported to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. Baltzell was issued a citation for failure to yield while turning left.
