The Illinois State Police report a double fatal traffic crash yesterday morning in rural Saint Clair County on Illinois 159 at Mulligan Road involving 3 vehicles. According to the preliminary investigation the driver of the Ford, a 58-year old female from Freeburg, was traveling Northbound on Illinois 159 near Mulligan Road. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 70-year old female from Belleville, was traveling Southbound on Illinois 159 near Mulligan Road. The driver of the Kia, an 88-year old male from Smithton, was traveling Southbound on Illinois 159 near Mulligan Road behind the Chevy. The driver of the Ford lost control of the wheel for unknown reasons causing her to cross the center line, into oncoming traffic striking the driver side of the Chevrolet, then striking the other car head on. The driver of the Ford and Kia were both pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 9:24 AM by Saint Clair County Coroner Dennis Nichols. The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured. A 29-year old male passenger inside of the Ford was transported to a Belleville area Hospital with minor injuries. An 87-year old female passenger inside the Kia was air lifted to a Saint Louis area Hospital with life threatening injuries. This case remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police. Names have not been released pending notification of all the families. Both lanes of Illinois 159 were closed for approximately three hours.
