The Nashville High School Board of Education met for a long meeting last night, which was Superintendent Wendy Davis’ last meeting, as she is retiring. Incoming Superintendent Ernie Fowler was also in attendance. The night began with the public hearing for the Amended Budget. Davis said this is not the final accounting for the revenue, as more state aid money could come in before the end of the school year in the amount of $40,000 to $50,000. The expenditures were also mostly done and she said everything stayed within budget there. It helped that gas prices were down to help keep the Transportation Fund expenses down. It was also fortunate that no big surprises came up in the year to throw the budget out of line. Later in the regular meeting, the Board unanimously approved of the Amended Budget. In a related move, they approved of Fowler to begin working on the upcoming school year’s budget after he takes office on July 1st. In personnel moves, Doug Althoff was named the new head coach of the girls’ varsity basketball team, taking over from Wayne Harre, who resigned this year. Althoff has been the junior varsity coach for many years. Haile Williamson takes over the Scholar Bowl team, as Lauren Cleeton has resigned to teach at McKendree University. Also, Doug Borgman will be a volunteer coach for the Bass Fishing Team. The Board also accepted the resignation of Brady Harre as part-time teacher aid and tutor as he moves on to graduate school and also the resignation in 4 years of Cindy Chapman as special education teacher at the Hoyleton Home. Title I and Title II grants have been applied for the next school year. The Board approved of 2 FFA trips and 1 FBLA trip for the summer. The Board also approved of some technology purchases discussed last month and to use the Lease Levy money, but not to exceed $54,000. This covers the purchase of Chromebooks, projectors, UPS batteries, subscriptions for various services for email, the school messenger service and other software, as well as some network switches and filters. There was discussion to keep the Chromebook insurance at $25, but to have the deductible be $5 for the first claim to fix the computer, $10 for the 2nd claim and $15 for the 3rd claim, as it had just been $5 for every claim. The Board approved of the student handbook changes they went over last month, approved the Section 125 – Flexible Benefit Plan for 2015-2016 with no changes at this time, approved of a $1,500 interfund loan from Working Cash Fund to the Tort Fund, and then approved the transfer of $3,900 of interest from the Working Cash Fund to the Education Fund and finally approved of abating $150,000 from the Working Cash Fund to the Education Fund, as was in the original budget. They approved of reappointments of using Farmers & Merchants, Regions, Nashville Savings and Community Trust Banks as depositories of school funds for the next school year. They also transferred nearly $13,800 from the Athletic Activity Receipts Fund to the Special Athletic Activity Fund to go to future projects, such as the resurfacing of the track. This money is left over from the various tournaments held at the school. Fuehne & Fuehne, LLC was contracted again to be the school’s auditors for the year. Prairie State Insurance provides NCHS insurance and both workers’ compensation and property – casualty insurance went up a total of 3 percent to nearly $52,000.
