The Okawville Village Board met last night and Village Clerk Wayland Jasper reports that the construction to put in new water lines to replace the ones that are about 80 years old has another couple of weeks, weather permitting. It started by Circle K and is going towards High Street. It was mentioned that traffic has not always been cautious through this area and motorists should slow down and watch out for workers. The Board passed a resolution on the Tort Immunity Act, meaning that they would not have to reimburse anyone for sewer backup in their basement. They also approved of the annual General Fund appropriations for this next year in the amount of $894,100 for all expenses for the Police Department, Street Department and other functions and departments not relating to the Water & Sewer Department. That department will receive $873,900 for the Operating and Maintenance Fund. The Board then approved the purchase of a new 4X4 truck from Ford Square of Mount Vernon in the amount of $32,797, plus fees to be used by the Street Department. Many months ago, they approved of $1,600 for the purchase of vests for the police, but they approved of it increasing to $1,830, as some safety features have been added to the vests. They also approved of purchasing a FLYGT-3085 pump for the Sewer Department, not to exceed $4,666. The Mayor also wants the police to take a tougher stance on weed violations in town. They currently send out letters warning residents to control their weeds, but the mail goes to Saint Louis first and delays the warning, so they will now make phone calls to these residents to get the weeds cut or the police will start issuing citations.
