U.S. Census Bureau statistics show that nearly 728,000 veterans live in Illinois. As we honored our Veterans here’s more data on the state’s veteran population. Only 5.7 percent are female, the unemployment rate for Illinois veterans is at 7 percent and there are 1,234 homeless Illinois veterans. Saint Clair County has the highest percentage of civilian veterans with 14.9 percent. Illinois veterans who served in World War II number 70,933, while there are 87,394 from the Korean War, 253,578 from the Vietnam era, 100,626 from the Gulf War from 1990 to 2001 and in the Gulf War from 2001 and later it is 68,308. There are 183,975 veterans that served during peacetime.
