We’ve reported on this scam before, but it keeps going around to all of the listening area and beyond. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has been getting reports from residents about a scam involving the IRS. Corporal Max Snyder, with the sheriff’s office, says someone saying they are “James Davis,” a deputy at the sheriff’s office, is requesting that potential victims call someone named “Shawn Woods” at the IRS at 202-864-1673. Corporal Snyder says potential victims are seeing the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office’s non-emergency number come up on their caller ID. The IRS phone number that people are requested to call shows it being in the Washington, DC area. Residents are asked to send money in the form of a Money Gram almost immediately or risk being arrested. They are told if they fail to send the Money Gram, that the IRS will file liens on their house, car and 401K. Snyder added that although phone numbers showing up on caller ID may look legitimate, they can be “spoofed.” Caller ID spoofing is described as a caller deliberately falsifying the phone number and/or name relayed as the caller ID information to disguise the identity of the calling party. Citizens are also reminded not to give personal information out over the phone.
