The Nashville Chamber of Commerce had some Southern Illinois University Carbondale architecture students back on Friday to make their final presentations.  Instructor Steven Turnipseed said their project was to look at 3 county seats along the Route 127 corridor from Interstate 64 going south and explore their physical environment and then develop ideas to reinforce the character each town possesses.  This included Nashville, Pinckneyville and Murphysboro.  4 proposals were presented on Friday and the main theme is the lack of any signage pointing motorists to the west of the intersection of Routes 127 and 15, where most of the business district is located.  Another recurring theme from each group is the orderly look on the south side of Route 15, but the uneven building levels and contrasting look of the building faces of the north side.  The students also though the downtown needed some sort of green look to it, which could include putting in some sort of park, as well as taking out a row of parking and extending the sidewalk out to include a bike path.  While many of their ideas are extravagant or would involve decisions by the Illinois Department of Transportation and the state, the idea of some kind of signage at the intersection could be something that could be acted upon.  During their initial visit and on subsequent visits, the students thanked all the people they talked to, as they made them feel welcome during their visits.
