Nashville High School Principal Brian Pasero, is informing the parents of NCHS students about a student survey that will be administered at NCHS called the Illinois 5 Essentials Survey.  This survey is based on the Five Essentials for School Success, an evidence-based framework developed by the University of Chicago, and asks students about their experiences in school.  This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school.  The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains.  These five indicators that affect and predict school success are Effective Leaders, Collaborative Teachers, Involved Families, Supportive Environments and Ambitious Instruction.  Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.  Students will be asked to take the survey during their study hall.  Those without a study hall are welcome to take the survey on their own time and can contact the media center for login information.  He says the identity of students who participate will be completely confidential.  Teachers or administrators will never see individual responses.  Parents have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your student and those questions can be found on the Illinois 5Essentials website.  If a parent does not want their child to participate, print out the “5Essential Parent Letter” that is linked at the top of the NCHS website or that has been emailed home, fill out the information, and return it to the office by January 22nd.  Parents are also invited to take the survey.  Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.  More information on how to login and respond is also located at the top of the NCHS website.  If you do not have access to our website you may call the school office, 327-8286 and request a copy of the letter or information to be sent to your home.
