The Washington County Board met on Tuesday night and they received the annual Washington County Health Department report from Director Sharon Frederking. They performed 111 inspections or re-inspections of 81 establishments with food, some being restaurants, bars or convenience stores. There were 8 different food complaints resulting in 7 inspections. They also inspected 11 wells in the past year and ran a private water analysis on 5 locations. They issued 42 private sewage permits and made 31 inspections, while receiving 11 complaints that they inspected. There were 9 nuisance complaints that they inspected in the past year. The WCHD also checks for mosquitoes and the diseases they can carry. They set out 79 mosquito traps and had them all tested with none found positive for West Nile. There were 2 electronic recycling collections conducted in 2015, but only 1 event was recorded as having 15,854 pounds brought in. There was a problem of the company not accepting televisions, but they are still trying to get that fixed for this year. The Health Department assists families in the county, including 24 pregnancies, 55 infants and 19 children. The current WIC cases were at 239 last year. They administered 139 Tuberculosis skin tests and no positive results were found. There were 580 immunizations administered and 1,086 vaccines given, including 1,030 for the season flu, which was much higher than in 2014. The WCHD conducted 775 lab services in 2015, including 285 tests for cholesterol. They administered 278 vision screenings and 305 hearing screenings. They also made 24 visits, twice a month, to the Washington County Jail, checking on 63 inmates. These visits save the county money, as the prisoners are required to be tested for various things. Frederking also said they have not received any funding from the State since July, but they have reserves that they are using to keep functioning. She reported that other County Health Departments may start to close their doors soon because of the budget impasse.
