Republican Governor Bruce Rauner plans to call for more funding for public schools during his annual budget presentation but it comes at a time when the state continues to operate without a spending plan for the current year. Rauner’s office says his speech to lawmakers Wednesday will include a proposal to allocate $393 million for early childhood education, an increase of $75 million. The governor also wants to increase the amount of money the state budgets on average per district. Rauner will tell lawmakers that the state “must make the education of our children our top priority,” according to a speech excerpt. Rauner’s plan may be complicated by the fact that the state is entering its eighth month without a budget and the governor and Democrats who control the Legislature have been unable to agree on how to proceed.
