The Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees will meet tonight at 6:30 in the Wedekemper Board Room on the main campus. They will go through several items to reduce expenditures again this month. They will discuss and possibly take action on discontinuing the education program at Centralia Correctional Center, including laying off all personnel. They will look to eliminate positions and lay off personnel with the Small Business Development Center, the KCTOP employees, and other part-time staff at the college. The Board will then discuss a furlough day plan, where employees would not work for a day, but also would not get paid for that day. There is also a plan to close and sell the Kaskaskia College Workforce Center. A couple of athletic programs were in danger of being suspended at last month’s meeting, but they no action was taken. Tonight, the Board will look at ways to do fundraisers to keep the men’s and women’s cross country and golf teams. They will also look at reducing athletic housing awards and housing payments. In other cost cutting moves, the KC Board will look at student club allocations, suspend department chair assignments, and accept the retirements of some employees. This is all needed to keep the college going during the financial crisis resulting from the fact that they have not received one-third of their budget from the state, due to the budget impasse, and it is believed that they will never be reimbursed either. In January, they approved of laying off 20 to 25 employees and eliminated some adult education programs in the first move to reduce expenses. In other action tonight, the Board will look at hiring someone for the auditing services and look at bids for the asbestos abatement in the Library. The meeting is open to the public.
