Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick is warning residents that the IRS phone scam is operating again in that area, which has happened in this area already.  In this scam, the caller identifies themselves an agent of the Internal Revenue Service and threatens the intended victim with fines or arrest if they don’t provide personal information.  Vick wants you to know that the IRS does not demand this information over the telephone.  Any phone call that uses threats to demand personal information like dates of birth, Social Security numbers, banking information, or family information like mother’s maiden name or children’s names, is a scam.  The sheriff reminds you to never give your information out over the phone.  This type of scam has become so common, and so successful, that the Treasury Department and IRS have focused the Treasury Inspector General’s Office on the problem.  If you fear you are a victim of this type of scam, go to www.treasury.gov/tigta to file a report.  Credit reports are available to everyone without any charge at www.annualcreditreport.com.  This website is a cooperative effort of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies.  Each company is required by Federal Law to provide one free credit report every 12 months, if you request it.
