The Washington County Board met last night and they heard from Highway Engineer Mitch Burdick about some projects. The Board approved of their part of the County Highway 21 overlay project, which Burdick says is the biggest road project the county has seen. It is funded by $2,050,000 from the federal government, $500,000 from the state and $450,000 will be locally funded. They also approved of some drainage projects that the County will pay half of costs. In the Johannisburg Road District, there are projects on Cowbird Road and Darmstadt Road. In Pilot Knob Road District, there are 2 projects on Arthur Road and 2 on Kennedy Road. Burdick says all 6 areas are in bad shape and need to be repaired or replaced. The bids for oil and bam material were approved. He says they paid $1.56 per gallon of oil, down from the $1.90 per gallon last year and he was satisfied with the bid results this year. Spring maintenance work of sealing cracks has begun for the road crews on some county highways. He also talked about the concern of fatal accidents at some intersections in the county. Over the past 18 to 20 months, there have been some fatal accidents at the intersections of county and state highways, and he has been getting phone calls about it. He met with the Illinois Department of Transportation about what could be done. They plan to do some enhance signage to help out. Burdick will keep the Board apprised of any decisions made on what to do about the situation. County Clerk & Recorder & Election Authority Nancy Heseman says the election went smoothly in March. While many counties experienced problems getting results on the internet, her office experienced none, as they went with a new system this year and it wound up being a good move. There was one zoning issue in Washington County that the Board approved of. Gordon Clary wants to put up a shed on some land in the Plum Hill Township, with the plan to put up a house in the future. The Greater Centralia Area Enterprise Zone covers 4 counties with one being Washington County, so anything needing to be approved, has to be approved by all 4 counties. The space of land between the current Walmart and the one being built in Centralia is actually in Clinton County, but there is a need to have that area added to the Enterprise Zone to draw in businesses. The Board approved of having that land added in to the current Enterprise Zone, which expires in 2017, as well as to have it added to the application for the next Enterprise Zone.
